CERAMICS

CERAMICS

An introduction to all of the work I did in my Ceramics course as a sophomore.

Seed Bank Project

This seed bank was the very first time I had ever worked with clay. Using red stoneware clay, we were instructed to make a vessel of any shape that could fit something small like a seed. Using only underglaze, we could design it however we wanted and then these pieces were fired in a makeshift kiln we built in the ground outside of the studio. Obviously my seed bank did not make it through the firing but it was still very exciting and again my first time working with clay. To learn more about the seed bank project please direct yourself to The Seed Bank Project (rachaelmarnejones.com) where my professor Rachael Jones (the founder of the project) explains it better than I could.

Functional Ware

Our next task in this class was to create a set of 2 cups, 2 bowls, and 2 plates. I made all of these pieces using white stoneware clay with a couple of underglazes/glazes

EARGASM

Eargasm was the second to last project we did in this class. It is focused on everything regarding music. Music and sound have been a big part of my life and I wanted to create a project based on the collection of music throughout the years. In the photos you can see a boombox, vinyl records, cassette tapes, and CDs. I also made a crate to acknowledge the fact that this is a collection of different forms of music maybe stored in a basement or an attic. With the arrival of digital music and apps like Spotify and Apple Music we have moved away from physical forms of “holding music”. This project is an ode to musical projects of all sorts.

Claymation

At the height of the pandemic, we returned to school in the Fall during which at the end of the semester there was a COVID outbreak, and every dorm was forced to go into shutdown mode. Since we couldn’t go to the studio my professor made our final project be a stop motion film using clay.
